HITTING BACK ROW AND TOPSPIN JUMP SERVES
I think hitting out of the back row is especially important for young players.
Hitting the back row ball trains the player to hit the ball up and over the net. The key here is where the ball is being contacted. Contact is made more above or behind and not out in front. This is especially important in juniors because most of the time even when on the front row, when the set is off the net, the hitter will need to hit the ball up and over.
Being a successful hitter isn't all about hitting the ball straight down over the net. You can have a lot of success contacting the ball high. For example, hitting the ball high over the block or off the blockers hands.
It's important to hit with good ball control sending the ball to open areas on the court.
Also, if you don’t ever practice hitting the ball off the net, then it will be difficult for you to adjust to a bad set.
I believe this is why a middle hitter will often make a lot of hitting errors hitting a high outside set. Most of their experience is hitting quick sets, contacting the ball out in front.
